Ian Tran Self-hate can happen as an echo of oppression. Watch the "It's not your fault" scene in Good Will Hunting when Will explains he'd choose to get beaten by a wrench rather than anything else "cuz fuck him, that's why."--it's to spite his father.
It takes decades or lifetimes to figure out sometimes. Even generations for countries and people to realize it. Consider once-colonized nations whose people show a kind of Stockholm syndrome to their former colonizers (Vietnam, Lebennon for example, both under heavy French influence--not saying that everything was bad), and probably some first nations/Native Americans who were forced through boarding schools or rejected their native language and culture after getting converted by missions.
